RATMALANA, MAY 26, 2026 The University of Vocational Technology (UoVT) marked an institutional and national milestone today as the Hon. Prime Minister, Dr. Harini Amarasuriya, graced the campus as the Chief Guest to officially declare open a suite of state-of-the-art facilities designed to revolutionize vocational education in Sri Lanka. The high-profile event saw the ceremonial launch of High-Definition (HD) Production Studio and Podcasting Station, a brand-new Artificial Intelligence (AI) Laboratory, and the Center for Gender Equality and Equity (CGEE). These landmark developments serve as a major tangible platform showcasing the Government?s active contribution and commitment to comprehensive education and TVET sector reforms.
A Living Example of Education Reform
During her visit, the Prime Minister participated in an exclusive, live televised panel discussion hosted within the new HD Studio alongside the Hon. Deputy Minister of Vocational Education, Mr. Nalin Hewage, Ministry Secretary, and Vice Chancellor Professor K.M.G. Prasanna Premadasa and the Dean of the faculty of Industrial Technology, Mr Dilantha Ratnayake to discuss the future map of vocational education. During the interview the Hon. Prime Minister emphasized the prominence the Government places on TVET within the national education matrix. She stated that the newly opened facilities are not merely physical assets, but the very mirror of practical education reforms shifting students away from pure theory toward production-driven, market-ready capabilities.
The Prime Minister highlighted UoVT?s crucial strategic positioning as the apex body within the country's vocational ecosystem, noting that the university is driving the nation toward a future where vocational training stands at the forefront of economic growth.
Demonstrating the university's holistic approach to progressive advancement, the event also marked:
- The Launch of the UoVT Green Policy: Outlining the campus?s definitive framework for sustainability and eco-friendly institutional operations.
- A Commitment to Social Responsibility: A ceremonial donation of laptop computers, to regional schools severely impacted by the recent Ditwa disaster.
- Showcasing Student Innovation: During the refreshments session, Vice Chancellor Prof. Prasanna Premadasa presented a special gift pack to the Prime Minister containing high-value, sustainable products researched, formulated, and manufactured entirely by UoVT undergraduates in their biotechnology and industrial laboratories.
